Part of the ritual

In the fall, bull moose begin to think of other things besides eating and aimless meandering.  As the female moose begin their lonesome calls hinting at the need for male companionship, the bull moose start making preparations for visiting with the cows.

A moose is at a distinct disadvantage in the handsomeness department with his large nose, bulging eyes more.

Things to do in Ignace

During the fall, moose begin to respond to “the call”. Moose rut and breed in late Sept and early Oct. We will go out some evenings and practise calling with camera ready. Karen’s cousin Anneke from Holland was visiting last month and we took her on a couple of moose searching adventures.

In spite of my best more.

That time of year

We are into our archery moose hunt already.

Cool calm mornings are perfect for calling an amorous bull into the area.  A little fog rising from the water and the quiet of early morning makes a moose call an eerie sound across the bay. more.

Busy beach

Last week we had some guys at Hilltop Lake .  One morning they woke to moose tracks in the sand in front of the cabin and the next morning bear tracks.  They were fishing so they had to settle for that very thin “track Soup”.

The hand prints were added by the photographers – likely to show the size more.

Bad Hair Day

Karen captured this young cow moose on film while driving to Dryden last weekend.  Looks like she just got up when in fact she is beginning to shed her winter coat.  In a month or so she will be a shiny near black and well coiffed for summer.

This cow was along side the road just out more.

Calling them out

Calling out a big bull moose gets the adrenalin pumping no matter how many times you do it.

Sometimes they come out unannounced, sometimes they sound like a freight train.  There is always something to learn about these animals.  As soon as you think you have them figured out they come up with something new about their behaviour more.

Moose on the loose

I have mentioned about how moose re-grow their antlers each summer.  Moose will drop or loose their antlers during the winter.  Sometimes a sharp eye will spot the cast-off antlers on the shore or inland from the lake.  These make interesting souvenirs.

These ones where likely dropped last winter and as is often the case, both sides more.
